To Nana

Nana....
You were one of the best nana's anyone could ask for
I am going to miss so much about you, I'm going to miss your yummy runny eggs and soliders that only you could make so the egg was just runny enough but still cooked.
I'm going to miss playing dolls in your garage and finding snails in your garden.
I'm going to miss you chasing me around the living room and playing snakes and ladders and cribbage.
I'm going to miss the warmth and comfort your home always gave me, and the safety I always felt with you.
I am going to miss listening to Bad Jelly the Witch on tape whilst sitting on the floor eating endless amounts of cheese crackers and drinking mountain dew.
Everytime I go to devonport I think of our long day trips from Papatoetoe, on the train and into the city then the ferry ride over.
I will treasure the blanket you made me, and remember how you tried to teach me several times how to knit and crocher my own but I never had the patience.

It's hard to pick a favourite memory of you as there are just too many (25 years worth) but I will always love you and always remember you as my happy, cheeky and VERY strong Nana <3

Poem Nana used to say....

"There was a man named Paddy O'Flynn who got out of bed to tuck himself in.
From this you would gather it's perfectly clear, that Paddy was Irish and paddy was queer.
He left his wee hoose one day in September, though where he was going he couldn't remember.
He comfortably settled himself on the train, but to see himself off he got out again.
Now when he was older he thought he would ride, so he mounted a gee gee with pride.
His friends all gathered to see where he'd gone, but he'd hoped off his horse to help himself on."

Just another Manic Monday

I have survived the weekend

I didn't self harm. There were times when I wanted to more than anything, when I felt so desperate and lost and alone and self harming would have taken that all away - that urge is still there but I am fighting it with everything I have left.

I don't want another trip to the hospital or another band aid to hide another open wound. I don't want another scar and another disappointed look from Mum.

I want to fight this. I want to be normal. I am trying to be normal and not over react to these scary emotions and thoughts that are taking over my body.

The funeral is tomorrow. I am scared.

They want me to say something but I wouldn't know what to say.

My emotions are all over the place at the moment, I cry and then laugh and I am scared of them all but I am just trying to get through each period of the day.

Get through the morning, then the afternoon, then the evening and then get some sleep and do it all again the next day.

The funeral is tomorrow :'(

6 steps to stop over thinking

Step 1: If You Can, Take Action
“Ruminators tend to get stuck in the analysis phase of a problem,” says Hubbard. If the trouble is specific and solvable, try to turn it into a concrete solution. Writing it down may help, suggests Nolen-Hoeksema. “Rephrase the issue to reflect the positive outcome you’re looking for,” she says. Instead of “I’m stuck in my career,” write, “I want a job where I feel more engaged.” Then make a plan to expand your skills, network, or set up informational interviews. Obviously this approach won’t work if you’re agonizing about whether you offended Sally at the party. “You can’t change history,” says Hubbard. “You have to shift your focus from rehashing the event to addressing the consequences.” If you really can’t let it go, call Sally, apologize, and move on to the next steps.

Step 2: Challenge Your Beliefs
Ruminators may tend to have irrational or exaggerated thoughts calledcognitive distortions. Let’s go back to the elevator: The ruminative inner voice says that your boss didn’t talk to you because she was disappointed in your work—a response that focuses exclusively on your shortcomings. But what else could it be? She could be worried about pleasing her own boss…or just trying to decide what’s for dinner. “You can cultivate a little psychological distance by generating other interpretations of the situation, which makes your negative thoughts less believable,” says Hubbard. This is called cognitive restructuring. Essentially it means that you’re putting your thoughts on trial and challenging their accuracy. The technique can be a handy weapon in the ruminator’s arsenal. (See Thought Police, next page.)

Step 3: Redirect Your Attention
The key, says Ilardi, is finding an activity that’s absorbing. WatchingAmerica’s Next Race for the Biggest Loser: All Stars or aimlessly filling an online shopping cart probably isn’t going to hold your attention fully enough to derail that negative train of thought. Ilardi recommends a physical activity that combines mental engagement and social contact, such as tennis or a brisk nature walk with a friend. You could also challenge someone to a round of cards or a Scrabble match, he says. Other options: Play with your kids or your pet, volunteer, or just call someone you like. (But steer the conversation away from your problems; see step 4.) When stuck in traffic, says Ilardi, listen to an audiobook, recorded stand-up comedy, or stimulating talk radio.

Step 4: Resist the Urge to “Talk It Out”
Brainstorming solutions with a friend is great. But dissecting and constantly revisiting negative details of a problem with someone is co-rumination and can send you further into despair. Studies have linked co-rumination between female friends to a significant increase in the stress hormone cortisol.

Step 5: Observe Mindfulness
It’s difficult to control what you think. But those thoughts don’t have to control you. One way to manage ruminative thinking is through mindfulness, a form of meditation that consists of simply focusing on the present moment without judgment. “Try noticing your thoughts as if they were leaves floating by in a stream,” says Nolen-Hoeksema. Don’t respond to them—just let them go. “Watching your ruminative thoughts without engaging with them can turn the volume down,” says Hubbard. “You see them pass by, but you’re not getting sucked into the current.” For more about mindfulness as a way to treat anxiety and depression, visit the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy site, at mbct.com

Step 6: Be Patient
Ruminating can be a stubborn problem, so you may struggle a bit at first. “These steps definitely get easier with practice,” says Hubbard. The last thing you need to do is ruminate about the fact that you can’t stop ruminating. If persistent negative thoughts are really interfering with your life, seek a therapist’s help. And take heart that you’re attempting to know thyself. Socrates would surely approve.
Thought Police

Here are a few common cognitive distortions that can take over when the hamster wheel of rumination starts squeaking. Do any of these sound familiar?

Emotional reasoning: Conclusions based on nothing but strong feelings. (“I feel guilty—I must have done something wrong.”)

Overgeneralizing: Seeing a negative event as part of an endless pattern of defeat. (“I didn’t get the job. I’m such a loser. I’ll never get another job again.”)

Disqualifying the positive: Discounting anything good as a fluke. (“That interview went well, but soon they’ll figure out I’m a fraud.”)

All-or-nothing thinking: Looking at an issue in black-and-white terms. (“My boss didn’t like an example in my report—I blew the whole thing!”)

Long emotions

I am still really emotional today
I switch between crying and then feeling normal
I just want to be alone.
I don't want to see anyone but I also don't like being alone cos then suddenly my thoughts turn dark...
I know cutting won't help in the long run but it gives me a rush.
I feel numb and cutting will make me feel something
Then again maybe I should have a drink?

Sadness

Sadness is such a funny emotion.
It's like someone is pulling on my heart.
I don't want to cry a lot but I feel like I can't help it
My nana passed way yesterday, she was 97. She was my friend, I love her so much. I dont like the thought of never being able to see her again, never being able to hug her again. I know she is in a better place wherever she has gone now but it still hurts and it doesn't take away the sadness in my heart

Love you nana Anne <3

Nana Anne

Nana Anne is 97.
"she has had a good innings" is the phrase being said a lot lately.
Doctors have said she only has about a week left. Her morphine has been up'ed and her body and mind are giving up. I wonder if she is chosing to die, is she lying in her bed at night thinking "I am ready - take me now"
If so why doesn't that work ..... why is when I go to bed at night not wanting to wake up that I am still here.

I don't want her to die. I want her to get out of bed and chase me around the living room like she used too. I want her to cook me lamb bones and silverbeet. I want her to tell me off for swinging on her fragile clothes line and for her to bring me hot chocolate in the mornings.
I want to play the yes/no game while lying in bed with her. I don't want to get old. I don't want to experience death.

I don't want someone I love so dearly to leave me; yet it is so hard to see her suffering, she is such a strong lady and never complained once, she deserves to be free from pain and rest now.

I am scared of her dying.
Overwhelming emotions are taking my hunger away and keeping me up at night.

When does this end?

What he doesn't see

He doesn't want a relationship
He likes that I am normal and relaxed what he doesn't know is that I really like him and that I'm not normal, he hasn't seen my scars, he hasn't seen me upset, emotional, me
He has seen me pretending (really hard) to eat normal, act normal, be normal.
I like him, i like that he makes me happy. I'm trying to just enjoy the moment and go with the flow but I want to cry knowing nothing more will happen.
He doesn't know I have a box of razors in my draw for when I get scared of my emotions.
He doesn't know I once weighed 42kgs and the reason I am "fussy" is cos I'm scared of food and getting fat
He doesn't know I consider death as an escape from life almost every day
To him am normal but it's killing me with the pretending
We haven't had sex, he doesn't know that this Friday 5 years ago I was being raped by my (then) best friends boyfriend friend in his garage after a 21st and that the reason I haven't had a relationship is cos I am terrified I will get hurt again.
Ido t know what to do

Honesty? And scare him off.
Go with the flow?and cry and cut when he leaves?

A good day

Surprisingly after the shocking anxiety stricken week I had last week I have had a good day at work.
I'm helping out at a different branch and I like working with the ladies, I'm feeling ok/ almost confident that I can do the job.
It was extremely busy but manageable and I'm even looking forward to dinner date tonight at the sushi room with Troy ....

Wise Mind

I am sitting in my room, visibly upset and emotional tonight.
The words "perfect daughter" and "normal" keep running through my head.

I am trying very hard to think rationally about those comments my mother made earlier.
"I am not coping with having a daughter who isn't normal or perfect"

Emotional mind vs rational mind is exploding in my head.

I am trying to take a step back and think this is not about me, this is my mothers issue she has. This is not my worry.
But the emotional mind of me is winning and the rational mind is getting lesser and lesser.

Emotional mind; I am worthless, I am imperfect, I will never be good enough for anyone, I am a waste of life, a waste of space, a waste of breathe.

Rational mind: This is your mothers problem, what she says and thinks isn't to do with you, it is about you but not because of you, you need to just do the best you can to survive and be the best person you can be.

Where does wise mind actually kick in?! When do both of the minds cross paths and give me some peace?

WOW this blog is depressing.

Not normal and Imperfect

I've had a very draining day today, I went to visit my friend and she said that my mum is/was very upset
She doesn't know how to cope with a daughter who isn't "normal" (<-- Grrrr I hate that term) and not perfect.
Last week after finding out I had been in hospital again for self harming, she wanted to disown me - she was angry, frustrated and upset that I had talked to our friend rather than opening up to her about what is going through my head/was going through my head when I self harmed that night.

To be honest- I would love to know the percentage of daughters that truly and honestly open up to their mothers, for me, I look up to my mum and I have this idea of being a good daughter, I want her to look at me in a light that is good. I don't want her to know I am struggling, I want to be the confident amazing person she thought she had raised, not some struggling, borderline, anorexic misfit floating through life in no general direction.

So anyway whilst talking to my friend she said that mum is ok now, they chatted for a while about things and the friend managed to convince my mum not to disown me and that I still need her around, I don't need her as a best friend, I need her as a support. The problem with that is that I know my mum cannot offer me the emotional support I need from her : hence another reason I don't open up to her honestly. I know she can't handle it the way I would like her to handle it.

I'm glad she hasn't cut me off and stopped talking to me, although seeing her today was difficult, there definitely was some extra tension and weirdness going on between us.

We always talk about mundane things - the weather, work, my brother, her new blinds, the latest purchase or something few and far between but even that was a struggle today.
I don't know what to do to make things better.

I know I am not perfect - far from it. I know I am not normal - also far from it. But shouldn't a mother love unconditionally - not judge and play on emotions the way my mother sometimes does.

Positivity bites

Positivity
I was positive for all of about 3 hours, I felt positive and hopefully like I could do this soon after my appointment with my psychologist Trish .... That feeling has gone, as I walk into town alone, knowing tonight I will be alone and the only reason I won't be alone tomorrow is is I am going to see my nana. How do I have no friends? How did I let it get this bad .... Is tis the worst it's going to get or is the worst still waiting in the wings for me?

What I want....

I want someone who is going to look at the bigger picture, not deal with my borderline personality, someone who can help me understand the triggers and why I act impulsively without blaming the bpd.
I want to find out why I am holding on to this stupid eating disorder, why I still resort to self harm when I am learning these amazing skills, where do these impulses come from and why are they so strong that i sometimes act on them yet other times reach out and get help.
I don't want to say this will kill me, or I will get better by a certain time, I am living in this hell hole, so while I am here I may as well try and create a liveable darkness. I want to be able to hold a match in the darkness while I am ultimately searching for the light switch ( I am sure it is here somewhere )

I want a life worth living, free from restricting, calorie counting obsessively, scared of mirrors, of pasta, of judgement and full of love not only from someone amazing and kind but love for myself, love of my self.

Why am I holding on to my eating disorder? What does it give me? What do I think that it gives me in times of stress, I don't know if I will ever be able to find the answers to these questions, or will this new therapist be able to help me find all this out.

I don't want a time frame on recovery, it's a journey and a process not a destination. It's a slow process that's for sure, it's a day at a time, a meal at a time, an hour at a time some days but it cannot be rushed or pushed or forced it must come gradually and steadily and most of all willingly.

Life is not a destination, life is a journey and as horrible and dark and twisted it is - this is my life but I will be damned if it is going to bring me down any further cos rock bottom is becoming a very solid familiar ground and that dead end is just a place to turn around.

I don't know how to stop these thoughts, these urges, these little demons but maybe I don't need to know - maybe I just need to be ... maybe I just need to live and recognize these thoughts and urges and demons and live

Recovery comes when there is worth, when the light at the end of the tunnel suddenly brightens and the it can be seen to be worth the climb. I'm not 100% convinced I am there yet, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I know it is there but I am just not sure it is worth the up hill battle I know is ahead of me if I really want to get there.

Freedom - from what though, my life, the darkness, I am so used to the darkness it has become my friend (not saying my ed is my friend) just saying where my head is at the moment, everything messed up and twisted feels like it is my comfort.

I.Really.Don't.Know.Anymore

I am trying.... OKAY

"Amy you could have all the support in the world but if your not prepared to do the work and want to change it's not going to make any difference"

An assumption that I am not trying or not prepared to try is killing me. It's like people think it's as simple as deciding to get better and doing it. I swing back and forth and get so overwhelmed with trying to get better and live a normal life, I push myself so much to be normal and then I crash. It's a cycle and before I used to hide it all, not tell anyone but people wanted me to talk about it, they said it would be better if I did and so i started talking, well now I can't stop and I wish I had never opened my mouth about what goes on in my head, maybe I will slow down on the talking and blog instead. I think its probably better for my relationships if I keep it to myself.
They can think I am normal and better and I will know how mentally broken and unstable I truly am.

I want to change. I want to get better. But life isn't that simple.
It is hard to change and hard work to keep fighting and sometimes cutting/self harming/restricting and drinking make me feel like I am coping and doing better !

If you haven't got anything nice to say don't say it at all..... has always been a good motto to follow

Great EDL

The cold words - "Are you ok" Don't mean alot when said like that.
I know I am just another annoying mentally ill patient that is under your wing and I am sorry for that. I don't want to work with you as much as you don't want to work with me.
I want my old key worker/EDL back.
I want my old psychologist back
At least when they talked they seemed to care, they talked to me like I was a person not just a phone call

A 2 minute conversation cos you said you would call me today before my appointment doesn't mean a lot to me.

Great support team I have.

overwhelmed with life

I feel so let down and i haven't even started with my new psychologist - I had a 2pm appointment yesterday which she didnt show up for, apparently she didn't get the message I was waiting. She called me an hour later apologizing and saying she doesn't know how the receptionist DIDN'T tell her and that this never happens (which I dunno if that makes me feel better or worse)
She wants me to go back today (at 4.30pm) but how can I trust her? I feel like she already doesn't like me and want me there (no matter how many times she says sorry) I want to go back to Melodie.

I haven't been doing any of my DBT skills that Melodie taught me. Instead I've been drinking and taking drugs for almost 2 weeks straight. - I haven't had a drink this week though and it's all I am thinking about.
I am numbing, blocking, avoiding all feelings, thoughts and emotions and they all are coming out at the most inappropriate times.

My nana (she is 97) is on her death bed, I went and seen her yesterday and she is so old and fragile and it was the hardest thing to see her just lying in her bed struggling to breathe :( I am so close to her and I don't want her to die. I want her to jump out of bed and chase me around the house like she used, I want her to cook me egg's and soldier's like she used to. I don't want to lose her.

My mum is being a f'ing useless human - AGAIN. she knows about my nana (its not her mum its my dads mum) yes she refuses to come see her with me even though I pleaded with her cos I was so scared about going on my own. I told her I had meeting with new psychologist (Trish her name is) - told her this on Wednesday night (appointment on Thursday) do you think she asked me/txt/email to see how it went? NO. Nothing.
I tried to tell her how things were going with Troy and she changed the subject to her new blinds she was getting.
Why is my mother so selfish?

Feeling overwhelmed with life right now :(

I have these strong urges to self harm, overdose, drink, do drugs, binge, purge, exercise and all of the above.

Last night I spent about 4 hours in A&E for self harming - they didn't stitch me this time - just glued me back together.
I was left sitting in the room on my own for hours with my thoughts and all i want to do is kill myself. But I know I can't. I feel like I am stuck. Being pulled in 2 different directions.

Someone save me from myself

Just another form of self harm?

I don't know what I am doing to be honest.
I keep telling myself that I am being happy and normal but i have been drinking and doing so many drugs and i feel like I need it to be happy.

Is this just another form of self harm?

During the week I am exercising with my boot-camp, restricting on days when i am not doing boot camp and eating some food on the days i am. The last 2 weekends, I have drunk both nights/days and done drugs both weekend - drugs which make me not hungry the next day(s)

I am meeting my new psychologist on Thursday and am freaking out and drinking and drugs make me feel happy and normal.
On some level I do realise that I am doing the complete opposite my last therapist told me to do - I am ignoring my feelings and pushing them away, I am scared and not sure what I am doing.

I am scared if I start acknowledging my feelings I will turn back to my eating disorder fully and self harm.

I haven't cut in about 2 weeks.

I don't know what I am doing.

2012

2012 has started off with a bang.

Jan.
Melbourne for New Years with my cousin and stayed with my sister.
Cut so badly one night I should have got stitches but managed to convince my sister not to take me to hospital.
Back in NZ and back to work. My nana turned 97, she is now in a hospital type place and can't walk or even remember who I am. Breaks my heart to see someone so lively and fun so old and fragile.
I don't think I am ready to let her go. I can still remember her chasing me around the living room and making me lamb.
I partied - a lot.

And then came Feb. started off with more partying.

My eating disorder is here - but not in the same way it was before xmas. It's strange really. I am restricting and obviously want to lose weight more than anything - i have gained weight since before xmas. Weight is around 51kgs. (WHICH DISGUSTS ME)
I am also doing a boot camp twice a week and it has encouraged me to eat but what it doesnt do is take away the guilt associated with the eating. It is making me feel good but also making me feel bad.
I feel like I need to be doing it everyday cos the days that I am not doing boot camp I feel too fat and worthless to eat.

I am struggling.

I haven't self harmed in about 2 weeks. I have self harmed 3 times this year but on a plus note, I haven't tried to kill myself yet.

I am just doing a lot of bad drugs and drinking more than ever.
Is this just another form of self harming?

I have met with my new case manager who also happens to be an eating disorder specialist as well. She is ok, kinda intense and I really don't tell her the truth about what's going on to be honest I don't think I am acknowledging to myself what is really going on.

I am meeting with the new psychologist on the 9th of Feb. I don't know what's going to happen.
I want to go back to Melodie. She pulled me back to reality and forced me to acknowledge my feelings.

Then there is the guys........
I have sorta been hanging out with 2 different guys -
1. T - is funny and so sweet but think he has baggage to do with his ex. I like him more than 2. but I am worried that i am competing with the ex and that I am not good enough for him. We haven't really been drunk together - we have just hang out and got dinners and chilled and done fun stuff during the day.
2. C- is hot and sexy and fun. and we haven't really hung out sober - we have always got wasted/drunk together. We have hung out once sober - after a big night though.
I haven't slept with either which is different.

I don't know what the rest of 2012 is going to bring or if I really want to find out.

That voice in my head

You are fat and disgusting and once he sees you for who you really are he will run and run far and fast and not look back.
You're not worthy of anything but starvation, exercise and anorexia. You ate nothing.
Once you realise that and cut ties with him it will set him free. No one wants a crazy girl bringing them down. You are so messed up, you can't keep pretending to be this normal outgoing fun person, you will crack under pressure and when you do that borderline personality will come rushing through like fresh water through a broken dam .... Be warned
